Proposed Trip to White Mountain California

June 28-July 5, 2008 I have done some initial planning and made some initial reservations for an observing trip to the University of California White Mountain Research Station at 10,200 feet in the Sierra Nevada range.

The trip would leave PVD on Saturday July 26th fly to Las Vegas, Nevada. Rent cars at the airport and drive to Furnace Creek Inn at Death Valley. Spend remainder of Saturday and all day Sunday in Death Valley. Monday travel to Crooked Creek Lodge at 10,500’ above sea level for observing on Monday, Tuesday Wednesday, and Thursday nights. Friday travel to Death Valley. Saturday leave Death Valley and travel to airport in Las Vegas for the return trip home.

Expenses as I can best determine: Airfare will change +/- Southwest is not yet booking June flights. Vehicles, large Suburban that will hold four easily cost $438/wk with a 1000 mile limit. Chevy Trail Blazers (smaller) cost $373/wk but probably limited to 3 people with telescopes but with unlimited mileage.

The rooms at Furnace Creek Inn at Death Valley are $125/night with 2 queen size beds. The lodging at Crooked Creek on White Mountain is $59 per individual. Some private rooms some dorm type rooms. This includes all meals on the mountain. Meals while traveling and at Death Valley are on your own basis.

Cost as best as I can determine: Flight, Vehicle, and individual room at Death Valley $1,211.00. Flight, vehicle and double room at Death Valley $1,023.00.

Possible Day Trips while at Bishop California: Telescopes and Equipment would have to be shipped UPS to Furnace Creek Inn at Death Valley and return shipped from the same. Or you could air fare them with you as you travel.

Date selection is based on new moon. The first available date at Crooked Creek is the first week in June IF the snow is gone. There is already another group booked in the event that the snow is gone. Next new moon is July 3rd. Thus the dates June 28th – July 5th. The August new moon conflicts with Stellafane.
