Seagrave Memorial Observatory

Jeff Padell will be hosting a solar observing day on Saturday, November 21st from 12-3pm at Seagrave Memorial Observatory, depending on the sun and the weather.

Members are encouraged to attend and bring their solar scopes or filters.

Jeff will have a H-Alpha scope, Lunt LS50 on alt-az mount as well as two scopes with white light filters also on alt-az mounts and a pair of “Sunoculars” solar binoculars made by Lunt. He will also bring a Canon camera with 100-400mm lens with 2x double making a 200-800mm lens and solar filter to demonstrate how photography can be safely done.

Several posters will be displayed during the solar day, one talking about solar safety and observing safety and precautions, another one showing the sun in cross-section and explanations of sunspot, filaments, prominences etc., and another with actual pictures taken of the sun. Handouts will also be available.

We will show people the sun through both white light and H-alpha for a total experience.
