Bio:

Ian Dell'Antonio has been a professor of physics at Brown since 1999, and a member of Skyscrapers since 2003.  Before that, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Bell Labs and a research fellow at the National Optical Astronomy Observatories in Tucson, Arizona.   His research involves using the bending of light due to gravity to study galaxies, galaxy clusters, and the contents of the Universe as a whole.

Abstract:

The Newest Great Observatory in Chile

After many years in construction, the Vera Rubin Observatory is finally on sky, and midway through commissioning.  I'll talk about the observatory, its characteristics, the long work by hundreds of engineers and researchers it took to get to this point, and the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) the telescope will undertake over the next ten years.  As a bonus, I MAY be able to show you the first pretty pictures from the camera.
