About Skyscrapers
Skyscrapers, Inc. is a group of people who are interested in the wonders of the sky. Members include knowledgeable amateur astronomers and beginning observers who get together regularly to discuss and learn about the science of astronomy.
Skyscrapers was founded in 1932 by Dr. Charles Smiley of Brown University, as the Amateur Astronomical Society of Rhode Island. The Society incorporated in 1936 and purchased Seagrave Memorial Observatory in North Scituate, Rhode Island from the estate of Frank Evans Seagrave, a noted amateur astronomer.
Skyscrapers, Inc. is proud of Seagrave Memorial Observatory and its variety of telescopes: the 8¼-inch historic Alvan Clark refractor, the 12-inch Patton reflector, 16-inch, and 12-inch Meade computer controlled Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes, and a collection of portable telescopes which are available to our members as loaner scopes. The observatory grounds also house a meeting hall which is used for meetings of the society.
